Crocs introduces new shoes at Vegas show

Denver Business Journal, Aug 4, 2005

Crocs Inc. of Colorado introduced three new lines of its outdoor shoes at a Las Vegas trade show.

The shoe maker, based in the Boulder-area town of Niwot, now offers new boating and winter shoe models as well as a rain boot.

The new boating shoe, called The Islander and selling for $60, combines one of Crocs’ existing designs with a leather upper piece. The new model will come in nine colors and sizes four through 13; it will be in stores this fall.

Crocs shoes are made from a patented closed-cell resin that’s softened by body heat, allowing the shoes to mold to the wearer’s feet for comfort and to prevent bacteria and fungus. Shoe tops often have vents that allow the passage of air, water and sand.

The company also is developing a clothing line.

The new rain boot, which will retail for $50, combines Crocs’ resin with an “ergonomically enhanced” sole. Called The George, the boot also is especially lightweight, and goes to retailers in September

The Aspen winter shoe, which will run $40 a pair, has a closed toe and no open vents, making it good for “cooler climates” as well as people such as health workers who need full foot protection. Crocs didn’t say when it will release the Aspen model.

Founded in 2002, Crocs is involved in a major growth program, having recently added new non-shoe products and expanded globally.

Last year, the company purchased Fin Project, an Italian company with manufacturing plants in Italy and Canada. The Colorado shoe maker also has manufacturing facilities in China and Mexico.

Crocs now sells in Australia, Japan, Southeast Asia and Europe, and plans to distribute its products in 20 countries by year-end.

Domestically, Crocs sells its shoes via more than 1,600 retail locations nationwide, including sports specialty stores such as REI and Sports Authority as well as department stores like Nordstrom and Dillard’s. Colorado dealers range from the Incline Ski Shop in Aspen to Wild Oats Market grocery stores.

Crocs recently has introduced new types of shoes, such as rain boots and flip-flops. It also has added a product line called Foam Creations, which includes cushions for boats and hot-tub pillows.

A couple of high school friends from Boulder, George Boedecker Jr. and Lyndon Hanson, launched Crocs as Western Brands LLC in 1999. Another friend, Scott Seamans, helped tweak the shoes’ basic design. The company later changed its name to Crocs Inc.
