The Man Issue
D Magazine, Nov 1, 2005
No Man Issue would be complete without a few well-styled pages filled with well-groomed gents. We sought out five guys – an artist, photographer, hairstylist, restaurateur, and store manager – whose individual looks we admire. Gentlemen, feel free to take a few pointers. Ladies, feel free to point.
THE JAUNTY GENT
Bode Helm, 42
Photographer
Helm, whose work can often be seen on the pages and covers of D Magazine (including these very pictures), began his photography career in 1980. The Missouri native traveled the world for 16 years, shooting for clients such as CBS and Paramount pictures. He settled in Dallas in 1996 to freelance and shoot more fashion editorials. He often travels to LA and New York to shoot for fashion magazines such as Shop Lift and Angelina. Helm recently shot ads for Elements, which will be featured in the upcoming Vogue and Lucky magazines. Thanks to his world travels, this cat always looks cool.
Describe your style: Bohemian, eclectic.
Where do you shop? In Dallas: Neiman Marcus, Armani, Ahab Bowen. In Los Angeles: “From the gypsies in Venice Beach.”
Favorite piece? “My crocs” (shoes).
What will you buy this fall? A hat, a scarf, and a big beaded necklace.
Style tip: “Stand out. Don’t blend. But be comfortable.”
Does your job affect your style? “Not really. I do my own thing.” But he does see more fashion than the average guy, which inspires him to be different.
Helm is wearing a black velvet Juicy jacket ($350/Saks Fifth Avenue), Upper Cut black snap shirt ($135/Premium 93), and Rock & Republic jeans ($195/Saks Fifth Avenue). Crocs and jewelry are his own.
