They look weird, but they’re very comfortable.

Made of moulded resin that softens with body heat to adapt to the shape of your foot, Crocs were designed as non-slip, no-scuff boating shoes about three years ago. Boaters love them because they float, are washable and come in more than a dozen colours. But in the last couple of years, Crocs have earned a cult following in hospitals and restaurant kitchens, where standing for several hours at a time can be an occupational hazard. Athletes, gardeners and spa workers love them, too.

It’s because of the ergonomically designed heel cup and arch support, which help reduce muscle fatigue in the feet and legs, and the nubby sole bed, which provides a massage every time you shift your weight. Plus, they’re ventilated and made of anti-microbial material, so you won’t fall victim to the dreaded stinky feet syndrome.

The shoes have a Canadian connection. Though Crocs is based in Colorado, the shoes were developed here and are still manufactured in Canada. But they are hard to find here, particularly at this time of year. Though many retailers are listed on the Crocs website, some don’t stock the shoes in winter. The Constant Shopper first spotted them at Sugarpants, a girly outpost on Ossington Ave. that opened last spring, and the shop has a good selection of colours now for those who want to wear them to work rather than on the dock. But call before you go (416-531-3426) as the shop’s hours of operation are quirky.

Marathon Sports also has a strong selection.

This spring, watch for a new thong style of Crocs called the Athens, as well as the closed-toe Aspen, which is suitable in workplaces where open shoes are not permitted.
