Doc Give Crocs Thumbs Up

BOSTON — Crocs are the hottest shoes of the summer. You can’t walk a city street or sandy beach without seeing the brightly colored plastic clogs.

NewsCenter 5′s Heather Unruh reported that Croc makers say they aren’t just comfortable, they’re good for your feet.

The shoes are big sellers at Michelson’s Shoes in Lexington Center.

“We can’t keep them on the shelf. They’re lightweight. They’re flexible. They’re fun. They just sell,” said Eric Michelson.

The shoes cost about $30.

“Oh, I love them. I think they’re great. I love the colors. I love the feel,” said one person who wears Crocs.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s Dr. John Giurini has a lot of patients who love the clogs.

“They’re also lightweight and cushioned. They have a cushioned sole, forefront and heel,” Giurini said.

Giurini said the clogs have some of the features he recommends people look for in all their shoes, including a wide toe box, so toes aren’t squeezed and pressured, build up in the arch for more support, a deep heel well and a strap or closed back keep the heel and ankle supported and aligned.

Crocs may be trendy, but they are not as supportive as a running shoe.

“It’s not the type of shoe I would spend all day in or go on long walks with or go shopping in the mall with. I would limit the amount of time I spent in it, but certainly, this is a step up from wearing a flip-flop or sandal and doing those same activities,” Giurini said.

Some people find Crocs to be just plain ugly.

“They were comfortable, but I wouldn’t wear them out in public. I don’t think they are the most pretty shoes,” one person said…
