Reptilian Footwear Catches On

Ottawa Sun, May 29, 2006

EDMONTON — Flip-flops were last year’s trendy summer footwear. This season’s must-haves are a sandal-cum-clog with the cachet of the perennial Birkenstock and the fad factor of the notoriously “hot for being so ugly” Ugg boot.

Crocs are foam shoes with holes across the top — making them look like an alligator’s snout, hence their name. They come in more than 30 colours and are manufactured in Canada, although company headquarters are in Boulder, Colo.

The shoes were originally marketed four years ago as boating footwear due to their slip-resistant sole, orthotic foot bed and holes that allow sand and water to escape. But they soon gained popularity with non-boaters, too.

MOULD TO YOUR FEET

Among their devotees are hospital workers, gardeners and chefs. Their appeal: Crocs mould to your feet, providing cushiony support. They’re also well ventilated and made of an antimicrobial resin called Crosslite.

Crocs cost $30-$40…

“Crocs are super-comfortable,” says Carla Gusa, an Edmonton X-ray technician. “They’re really supportive for going up and down (the halls), pushing patients around and being on my feet all day.”

Gardeners wear them because they’re breathable.

“We did Birks for years and they were great, but these are better,” says Barbara Eldridge, 58. Her husband has two pairs and wears them for working in the yard.

A wide selection of Crocs can be seen on the official Crocs website www.crocs.com…
