Stylish Summer Shoes Can Take a Toll on Feet

Quad-City Times, May 27, 2006

Our feet carry us around, day in and day out, bearing our weight on their soles, so choosing the wrong shoe can make for a day of discomfort.

This summer’s fashionable shoes, including the high wedge, platform shoes and even the seemingly harmless flip flop, can be bad for feet.

“If it’s for a special occasion, it’s worth a little discomfort,” said Hillary Blevins, 28, of Eldridge.

Although Ms. Blevins said she tries to buy shoes that will be comfortable, it doesn’t always work out that way. The combination of a shoe’s height and style can be torture.

Amanda Edwards, 29, of Davenport, said narrow, pointy heels are what cause her feet to hurt…

So what should you wear?

Dr. Reid said the colorful Crocs offer good shape and support.

“They are wonderful. They are fun because there’s all these bright colors,” she said. “The original Crocs are really great for your foot. They actually are molded to the shape of the foot. The inside has an arch built in. It’s honestly like you are walking on a water bed.”

Shoe-buying tips Look for shoes that evenly distribute weight over the entire foot. A good arch support will act as a shock absorber as you walk. A wide toe box will keep toes from being pinched. Have your foot measured to be sure you are purchasing the correct size shoe.
